Never The Face

Author: Aries Sands

Genre: Dark (romance?)

Rating: 1/5*

WARNING:This is not your mother’s version of BDSM!!! And it is not for the faint of heart.

The protagonist is living a boring and disattisfied life, especially in the sex department, when the antagonist enters her adult life (she knows him from her childhood as a family friend). She yearns for something more, something that will set a spark and bring her true desire, excitement, and fulfillment. Just after her thirty-third birthday, she runs into David, an old flame who’s now married. David invites her to dinner. Then he calmly and matrer-of-factly tell her, “I spent the weekend choosing a stick to beat you with.”

The protagonist is shocked by his words, in more ways than one. Thus begins a journey into a dark and twisted world of brutal and violent sumission AND unbelievable ecstasy. Unable to resist the temptation of sexual submission, the protagonist begins to discover the full, destructive power of obsessive love – and gradually spins out of control.

The main character’s name is never mentioned at any time throughout the entire book. This is just one of the subtle ways by which the author stresses the insignificant role she plays in the life of David, the antagonist (there are definitely no heroes or heroines in this story).

I have to say this was one of the most interesting and complex stories I’ve read in a while. The author’s style of writing seems quite simple. Yet, the story is anything but. You must read between the lines with this one. You will be waiting for an ending that will never come. I went into this book naively thinking one thing, and instead, what I got was something I still have a difficult time putting into words. Perhaps, those who live this lifestyle, would find this story normal or easily summed up in one or a few words?? However, for me, this story was unable to fit inside any one box. One thing I know for sure, this is not a book I would recommend to anyone and definitely not something I would ever read again.

There is no happy ending in this story. More of a continuing cycle of degradation and abuse, both physical and emotional. *I have given the story 1 star due to the fact that I was actually able to complete the story quite quickly. However, this was much similar to a train wreck; you need to look away, but you just can’t. I kept hoping the author would deliver a better ending than the one received. The ending left me with a horrible feeling inside.

If you’re willing to take a walk on the dark, degrading, and dangerous side, you can find Never The Face on Amazon, available in hardback.

Grounded (Up In The Air Series)

Author: R.K. Lilley

Genre: New Adult, erotic romance, romantic suspense

Rating: 4.7/5 stars

So…I finally completed R.K. Lilley’s Up In The Air series!* Whew!!! This series blew me away, and put me through some changes! I positively loved it!

First off, I have to say it. The grammatical errors are still present lol
This is obviously just part of what we readers get when reading this series haha. BUT the intense, hot love scenes make up for it all, trust me 😉

As usual, no matter how hard Bianca tries, she. Just. Can’t. Leave. James. Alone! She couldn’t if she tried (and believe me, she has tried)! Long story short, she decides to put away her relationship hang ups and issues and really give it a go with James and agrees to live with him! With an Alpha male like James, you can only imagine where things go from here.

There is romance, mystery, suspense, and even a bit of laughter in this story. Bianca’s life is still in danger, and James is going absolutely mad with wanting to protect her and keep her out of harms way every second of each day.

I don’t want to give too much away, because this is definitely a series you want to read! Suffice it to say, secrets are revealed, people are hurt (emotionally and physically), and ties are severed (and mended). Yet, through it all, love rules! It is an amazing roller coaster of a ride with these two!

I was so saddened to say goodbye to James and Bianca, but the author did a great job wrapping up this perfectly imperfect couple’s story. Do read this series if you haven’t. It’s a good one!

*There is a 4th installment in this series entitled Mr. Beautiful, James’ and Bianca’s story told from James’ POV.

All books in this series are available on Kindle in ebook or paperback form.

Leo (A Sign Of Love Novel)

Genre: New Adult

Author:Mia Sheridan

Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Love, love, love this author! So far, each book I’ve read by Mia Sheridan, has been awesome! However, I must admit this was not one of my favorite reads by her. Now, that is not saying it is a bad story, just not as great as a few others I’ve read by her.

The story centers around Evie and Leo, two young adults who met in foster care as young children and became close friends and fell in love. When Leo is adopted and moves away, he promises to keep in touch with Evie and return for her one day (famous last words). This never happens, and 8 years later, Evie runs into a stranger named Jake who claims to have been sent by her long lost love, Leo, to check up on her…

Without giving away any details, I will just say the story gets a bit strange at this point. There is a big secret/mystery surrounding the stranger Evie meets. However, the big secret is no secret at all. There is a sweet love story wrapped up in all the drama, but the story just didn’t seem like much of an original one, in my opinion, and it was so predictable. The dialogue seemed short, the scenes hurried, and this was a quick read for me. Due to the hurried pace, I felt no connection whatsoever with any of the characters. This was not a story I was dying to get back to, which is usually one of the signs of a great read for me. That being said, I have to say, I still love this author and will continue to read any and everything she puts out.

You can check Leo out for yourself along with its sequel (Leo’s Chance).*

Mile High (Up In The Air Series)

Author: R.K. Lilley

Genre: New Adult, erotic romance, romantic suspense

Rating : 4/5

Mile High (Up In The Air: Book Two)
This book picks up right where Book 1 left off. Over a month has passed since the brutal attack which placed Bianca in the hospital. Although she has asked for space and pushed James away (due to a painful misunderstanding), every waking (and sleeping) moment has been filled with thoughts of him and the darkly erotic world he has introduced her to…

Although I feel Book 1 was better than this one, Book 2 is also a really good read. Misspellings and grammar mistakes are still present, but do not appear as frequently as in Book 1. Without giving too much away, I will say there are even more (and even hotter) sex scenes in this book. I honestly didn’t think it could get any hotter! The kink-o-meter is off the charts in this series!!! Bianca is discovering things about herself, she is coming to an understanding about her deepest and darkest desires and how her strong attraction to James ties in to all this. There are also some new twists and turns in this story and quite a bit of mystery and suspense, as well as a brief introduction to a pivotal character who is mentioned near the end of the story and, I assume, will play more of a prominent role in the third and final installment of this series.

I have a confession to make- Bianca’s poor, helpless damsel in distress act is getting a bit stale. There is a HUGE amount of fawning over her from several men. It’s just not realistic and I couldn’t help but be reminded of Isabella Swan from the Twilight Series and Anastasia Steele from the FSOG series (loved both series but hated that character “flaw”).

Aside from that, overall, this is a story that continually astounds and amazes me! Just when I think things have gone as far as they could possibly go, new boundaries are explored and broken.

I just started the last book in this series (Grounded). Stay tuned…

In Flight (Up In The Air Series)

Author: R.K. Lilley

Genre: Erotic romance, New adult,  romantic suspense

Rating: 4.5/5

I’m on cloud 9 after reading this book!

Bianca is a reserved flight attendant who completely loses her cool when she comes across billionaire James Cavendish, a passenger seated in first class during one of her flights. James is immediately smitten with Bianca and goes about pursuing her. Neither James nor Bianca believe in dating but soon find themselves in an interesting situation.

Although Bianca is used to saying, “No”, she finds that more and more difficult to do when it comes to James, who refuses to take no for an answer when it comes to what he wants.

James is very much attracted to the submissive side of Bianca, and she is strongly pulled in by not only James’ great looks but his dominant side as well. Bianca has secrets she refuses to share with James. However, unbeknownst to Bianca, James also has secrets. Dark secrets..

This book was H.O.T!!! Although the theme is quite recycled (FSOG-ish romances), it still managed to hold my interest. There were tons of typos, but in my personal opinion, that did not take away from the overall  theme of the story. I don’t want to give too much away. This story has a bit of suspense and mystery, romance, and lots of steamy, HOT sex scenes! Suffice it to say this is definitely one you want to read! I have the trilogy and am about to start the 2nd book, Mile High. So stay tuned…** 4.5/5 stars

The Protector

Author: Jodi Ellen Malpas

Genre: Contemporary romance, romantic suspense,  erotic romance

Rating: 1.5/5

Oh, boy!!! Where to begin! You know that feeling of extreme excitement and elation upon receiving a book you’ve been wanting so badly, by an author you have come to adore? Well, that’s the feeling I had when The Protector by Jodi Ellen Malpas finally arrived in the mail a few days ago. Upon starting the book, I found it to be quite slow, but no big deal, right? I mean, some books start off slowly only to end up being incredible! Unfortunately, that was not the case with this book. I just finished reading the last chapter, and I feel utterly empty. I NEED a good story so badly, and I was truly hoping this would be that story. It was not.

While the author started with a topic that was interesting enough, she just didn’t build a great story with the theme she chose. I didn’t care for the characters in the slightest bit. The female was supposed to be in her 20’s. Yet, I had to contunually remind myself of this due to her immature behavior (mid-late teens perhaps). The suspense build-up surrounding the HUGE secret was weak, and the secret itself was nothing worth being so secretive about. Especially in this day in age. I think there were 2-3 sex scenes, which weren’t drawn out enough and weren’t very hot at all, nothing that evoked a hot-and-bothered feeling whatsoever.

To be fair, I absolutely LOVED this author’s previous series (One Night Series and This Man Series), but this book was an absolute flop. I recommend reading those 2 series, but in my opinion, this one is a definite pass.

Jagged (The Colorado Mountain Series)

Author: Kristen Ashley

Genre: Contemporary romance

Rating : 3.7/5

I just finished the 5th book in Kristen Ashley’s Colorado Mountain series, entitled Jagged. While this wasn’t one of my faves in the series, it was better than book 4. The charrcters and story development seemed more original and thought out, overall. The sex scenes were HOT, and I found myself looking forward to reading each one. And Kristen Ashley did not disappoint;  each sex scene was hotter than the one before! Despite this, I’m thinking although this series started strong, it may be ending weakly. I am really hoping I am wrong in my thinking. There are 2 books left in the series. I am considering taking a break from this series and reading something altogether different before completing the last 2 books. So, it is possible my next review may be for a standalone novel that is not affiliated with this series. Or I may start a new series altogether.  We shall see…
